Acute: Admit to alcohol unit and treat with IV fluids, long-acting benzodiazepines such as chlordiazepoxide (Librium) 25-50 mg q4h, anticonvulsants, such as phenytoin 100 mg q6h after loading dose, vitamins, and minerals. Haloperidol may be needed to control hallucinations. After acute stage, begin rehabilitation with group and individual psychotherapy and referral to Alcoholics Anonymous.
