Initiate Treatment with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors
This class of agents includes what others describe as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, and fluvoxamine) as well as the less selective but potent clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant. This group of medications is most effective when insistence on routines or rituals are present to the point of manifest anxiety or aggression in response to interruption of the routines or rituals, or after the onset of another disorder such as major depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
