Initiate Treatment with Antibiotics

A clear liquid diet is recommended, and oral broad-spectrum antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin plus metronidazole are continued for 7 to 10 days. Pain medications, especially morphine, which has been shown to increase intracolonic pressure, should be avoided.
