Calcium channel blockers
Nifedipine, it has been reported to both cause and alleviate muscle cramps. Verapamil is the only other calcium channel blocker that has been used to treat leg cramps. In an open-label trial, eight older patients (age range 62 to 87 years), with complaints of nocturnal leg cramps and who were refractory to quinine therapy, were given 120 mg of oral verapamil at bedtime over an 8-week period. After 8 weeks of therapy, the leg cramps resolved in seven of the eight patients.
