Exercise

Begin a regular exercise program of walking. Patients should be encouraged to pick a realistic distance, perhaps initially one-half mile per day, and walk to the point of pain, stop and rest, and then resume walking. A doubling or more of walking distance should occur within several months. Often, inclement weather prevents patients from walking.
