Acute angioedema resulting from this condition does not respond well to antihistamines, epinephrine, or steroids. Fresh-frozen plasma infusions (2 units) may be necessary. Prophylactic treatment if episodes are frequent is danazol (Danocrine), beginning at 600 mg daily, or stanozolol (Winstrol), beginning at 10 mg daily, gradually reduced to the lowest possible maintenance dose but increased for elective surgery. Liver function should be monitored regularly. Children should not be treated with anabolic steroids but with tranexamic acid (Cyklokapron).
