Seventeen to 28 million Americans have acne. In adolescence, acne affects more boys than girls, and boys tend to have more severe involvement. Acne is defined as the presence of at least 5 to 10 comedones, usually acne, pimples, zits associated with papules, pustules.
Acne comedones are usually found on the forehead and upper cheeks of adolescents. Comedones may progress to inflammatory lesions on the lower cheeks, chin, chest, upper back.
In females, the possibility of androgenic pimples, disorders such as polycystic ovarian disease and Cushing's syndrome should be considered. The patient should be asked about menstrual irregularities and should be examined for hirsutism.
Acne will often gradually subside during the late teens. However, between 20% and 50% of women seeking acne treatment are in their 20s, and a considerable number have persistent acne into the 30s, 40s.

Diet. Patients should be advised to eat a well-balanced diet and to avoid foods which consistently result in flare-ups.
Cleanliness
Development of acne is not related to dirt. Excessive scrubbing may worsen the condition.
