Pathology of Ovary and Ovarian Neoplasms

CLASSIFICATION OF OVARIAN NEOPLASMS: TUMORS

Surface epithelial

Sex-cord stromal

Steroid (lipid) cell

Germ cell

Mixed germ cell: sex-cord stromal

Miscellaneous and metastatic/secondary

While ovarian tumors demonstrate tremendous histological diversity, there is considerable overlap in their gross appearance making their distinction often difficult on gross examination alone.

A variety of clinicopathologic data are important to help narrow the diagnostic choices.

Age of the patient

1) Sex-cord stromal tumors are almost always unilateral and

confined to the ovary

(2) Metastatic tumors are bilateral 65 % of the time
