Calcaneal Apophysitis

Calcaneal apophysitis (Sever's disease) presents in a similar fashion in the skeletally immature athlete, but the pain can be posterior or calcaneal apophysitis.

Treatment is similar to the nonoperative approach used for acute Achilles tendinitis. We rarely use a custom orthosis.

Ice is very beneficial in these athletes. Furthermore, activity limitations (cross training, low-impact aerobic training, and avoidance of aggravating activities) are often required to alleviate symptoms. These young athletes are able to resume unlimited pain-free activities by 2 to 3 months in most cases.
